Re-Conditioning
It’s no secret that we can gain strength through exercise. Many of us do this by hitting the gym regularly. However, what many of us fail to realize is that this is especially important for individuals who have lost strength due to illness or injury.
I often get clients who have lost strength due to a prolonged hospital, a surgery, of a bad injury. Other than having lost the ability to move as easily as before, these clients also have a great deal of physical pain as they suffer from muscle atrophy which cause excessive muscle tightness and lengthening in all the wrong places.
In this group of clients, it can seem like an insurmountable task to regain what strength they have lost previously. It is therefore important for each client to have a personalized exercise program that not only matches their ability, but still challenges them and allows them to keep their end goal in sight. Be it getting up to get to the toilet independently, walking to the market or taking a trip on an airplane to visit their children, our therapists will customize a program that matches the clients’ various needs.
These sessions may take place within the home or at the clinic, depending on the need and ability of the client. It is also dependent on the type of equipment required by the client.
It is important to remember that as with working out in the gym, post-rehabilitation muscle aches are part of the process as well. Other than strengthening exercises, our therapists will also put together stretches to help clients alleviate their post rehabilitation soreness.
As progress in strength is made, there will also be the addition of balance and coordination exercises for the clients to regain functionality in their daily activities.
