Stroke Rehabilitation

There is a focus on a survivor’s ability to do what they used to do before the stroke. However, there is a journey towards that. Recovery after a stroke takes place on two main levels: neurological and muscular.

In the brain, neuroplasticity takes place to help the brain to recover or ‘re-wire’ the functions lost in the parts of the brain that was injured in the stroke.

On the muscular level, due to reduced input from the brain, there is less muscle activation which results in muscle wastage. Hence, there is a need to strengthen the muscles to function and encourage signal input from the brain once again.

In addition to strengthening specific muscles, stroke rehabilitation takes into consideration the use of activities that take place frequently. This enhances the functionality of the treatment sessions and encourages neuroplasticity.

Stroke rehabilitation sessions mostly take place within the homes of stroke survivors as that is the environment that they would first need to cope with. The ability and confidence for survivors and their families and/or caregivers to help them around the houses makes for a great foundation to move onto other activities.

Other than the recovery of the individual, families and caregivers of stroke survivors are involved in the rehabilitation process. This encourages the survivors, as well as alleviate stress on caregivers who may not have known how to care for their loved ones previously.
